Not every student is lucky enough to enjoy the luxury of personal, private transportation while still enrolled. But fortunately, when you’re living in a major city, it’s beyond easy to take advantage of the myriad alternative modes that can quickly take you where you need to be. And there’s no way to get around the fact that a combination of no car and a busy life means that public transportation is a must. Thankfully, there is plenty of transportation near our Philadelphia apartments, namely the ones at YoNo and Academia Suites, both of which are surrounded by several options like Fern Rock Transportation Center, which is served by the Broad Street line.
The best part about being a student dependent on public transportation is that, while you’re enrolled in one of a select number of schools, SEPTA offers discounts that make everything much more affordable, giving you the freedom to access all the different options for getting around the city. To benefit from the discount, you will have to choose between a monthly or semester-long pass, rather than individual trips. But regardless of which you choose to purchase, you’ll be paying 10 percent less than the rest of your fellow passengers, so that’s something to celebrate! Please note that passes are purchased through the school you’re enrolled in, so do make sure you are in touch with them, rather than SEPTA, to get yours.
Any school that SEPTA services can participate in the program. If you’re not sure whether yours already does, give them a call or simply check the list. If they aren’t on the list, you’re always welcome to discuss the program with school officials and encourage them to participate on behalf of students in need.
With so many modes to choose from—regional rail, the subways, trolley lines, buses, and more—relying on SEPTA is both efficient and affordable, letting you explore the city from top to bottom. In other words, you’re never going to feel stranded or isolated.
Beyond getting around, there are additional perks to being a SEPTA pass holder, including discounts and freebies at dozens of companies throughout the city—food and drink, arts and entertainment, fitness, and more! Using your pass, you can get a free dessert from Maggiano’s in King of Prussia, 10 percent off select items at Riverbend Cycles, and even a free month of membership at Sweat Fitness. (These don’t even begin to scratch the savings surface!)
While you may wish you had your own wheels, there’s something to be said about depending on alternative methods, especially when you have so many options for public transportation near Philadelphia apartments. You’ll be reducing your carbon footprint and your expenses.
